Each academic member of the department carries out his/her own research in personal laboratories. These laboratories are home to senior (4th year) students as well as postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and research visitors. The Faculty of the Division of Natural Sciences, despite a heavy commitment to high quality teaching and organisational responsibilities, manage to maintain excellent levels of research through sheer determination. As such, we as a group continue to publish in international journals, including Nature and Science. The NS Division attracts many research fellows, for example through the JSPS Scheme (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science), and has a special professorship (the Othmer Professorship) through which we invite one scholar every year to research and teach for a year at our Division. So far, Othmer scholars have come from Japan, Canada, Australia and the USA. Recently the NS Division itself was granted a special research grant by the Japanese Governmental Body MEXT, and this has considerably improved the levels of equipment and supply funds for research. In addition we have applied for special equipment grants, and in the last few years have been able to purchase a BioRad confocal laser facility (with Zeiss microscopes), a 500MHz NMR, a Scanning Electron Microscope, X-ray spectrophotometer, and others. |
